The wall of the German Ambassador to Greece Wolfgang Dold was filled with bullet holes on Monday following an overnight attack in Athens. Dold stood on the balcony of his residence in front of the wall. Despite police finding over 60 bullet casings at the scene of the attack, nobody was injured.
The attack follows mass protests in Greece during German Chancellor Andrea Merkel’s visit in October. Similar protests were also held when Merkel visited Cyprus earlier in 2013, while she was also met with mass protests in Lisbon in November.
The Greek government has condemned the attack, claiming it is an attempt to damage the country’s reputation abroad at a time when it is about to become the president of the European Union. The country will be honoured with the presidency from January 1 until June 30. No group has claimed responsibility for the attack.
